The Pont d'Avignon and the Palais des Papes

Built in the early 12th century, the Pont d'Avignon (whose real name is Pont Saint-Bénézet) is one of Avignon's major landmarks. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The special feature of this bridge is that only four arches remain, the other 18 having been destroyed over the centuries. It is therefore not possible to cross the Rhône via the Pont d'Avignon. Built in the 14th century, the Palais des Papes is the largest Gothic building of the Middle Ages. It is actually made up of two buildings: the palace and the new palace. Built on the Rocher des Doms, it overlooks the city and the Rhône. The papal gardens, meanwhile, are an enchantment through the seasons. Every year in July, the main courtyard of the Palais des Papes plays host to the Avignon Festival, the world's largest live performance and theatre event.
